Looking ahead in 2016 – 96 Action and Adventure games

A bit of a late start to this year’s list, but it turned out to be a lot larger than last year’s!

This year will be huge like last year’s looking at this genre. Like before, this list isn’t the ultimate in comprehensive collections – it’s just a big slice of information cross referenced between a number of sources from Gamestop to Wikipedia, and some games aren’t here at all even if the other sources note them because when I tried looking into them, there was hardly anything noteworthy. But if you feel that this list is missing a favorite or two, be sure to let everyone know in the comments.

For now, let’s take a look!

Adr1ft – Three One Zero (PS4, Windows, XBO)
Homepage
TBA 2016

What is it?
A game that its designer, Adam Orth, described as a metaphor for the upheaval he had experienced from the public backlash over his comments to “get over it” when it came to the Xbox One’s proposed always-on DRM. Players are cast as an astronaut floating in space after a devastating accident that they can’t remember. All they know is that they have to find a way to survive by repairing an escape craft while navigating the wreckage of a massive space station. It was initially slated for a 2015 release but was pushed to accommodate Oculus VR support.

Alekhine’s Gun – Maximum Games (PS4, Windows, XBO)
Homepage
February 9, 2016

alekhinesgun_1_zpshprx8wmv

What is it?
Stealth-action game that is the third entry in the Death to Spies series. Players will play as a KGB colonel turned CIA spy performing missions during the Cold War with flashbacks to WW2. The game will have eleven levels set in a variety of military and civilian locations, realistic venues from America to Cuba and Eastern Europe, and multiple paths to success. Think of it as Hitman meets Cold War wetwork as you try to unravel a secret conspiracy to topple the fragile peace between the United States and the USSR.

Allison Road – Lilith Ltd. (Linux, OS X, PS4, Windows, XBO)
Homepage
TBA 2016

What is it?

All you know is that you must find them and survive the terrors of Lily and the shadows that live inside your home over the course of five nights. Can you tell what is real and what isn’t? Can you unravel the mystery before 3:00 AM on the final night?

Ark: Survival Evolved – Studio Wildcard (Linux, OS X, PS4, Windows, Xbox One)
http://www.playark.com/
June, 2016

What is it?
A first-person survival game where a player must try to survive on a mysterious world populated by dinosaurs. The world map, known as “Ark”, is a massive wilderness where players will need to gather resources to build a shelter, find food, and eventually build weapons to survive and even tame some of the dinosaurs living there. It’s also set up as an MMO which emphasizes survival as other players can compete or cooperate with each other. Even when you log off, your toon is still in the world and if you don’t find a safe place to do so when that happens, could end up killed and robbed the next morning.

Arslan: The Warriors of Legend – Koei Tecmo (PS3, PS4, XBO)
http://www.koeitecmoeurope.com/games/165/Arslan%3A-The-Warriors-of-Legend/
February 9, 2016

What is it?
The Dynasty Warriors-like adaptation of the fantasy series that tells the story of Arslan’s attempt to retake the kingdom that his father was betrayed for. Through the anime series and the current manga, it tells the story of Arslan and his friends’ experiences with the world against the backdrop of war. A demo was releaed in Japan that depicts some of the elements of the main game including calling forth your entire troop to sweep across the battlefield to break through special points. Using cel-shaded characters to give the entire game an anime look, Arslan is something that could pique the interest of both Dynasty Warriors fans and fans of the series in the West.

As part of the Chronicles series, this one takes place in India featuring Arbaaz Mir in 1841. The conflict apparently centers itself around the Sikh Empire and the East India Company. Exploration game taking you underground where death waits around every corner with retro-visuals. It boasts a “brutal but fair combat” with sword and shield.

Broforce – Free Lives Games (PS4)
http://www.broforcegame.com/
TBA 2016

What is it?
Side scrolling action adventure that’s a hilarious homage to 8-bit aesthetics, 80s over-the-top action set pieces, and filled with parodies of popular action stars ranging from Rambo to the Terminator. It’s officially released for PCs on Steam and is slated for a 2016 release on the PS4.

Cobalt – Oxeye Game Studio (Linux, OS X, Windows, X360, XBO)
http://playcobalt.com/
February, 2016

What is it?
A 2D, side scrolling action platformer starring the player as an agent named Cobalt. The game boasts features like slo-mo rocket punches, upgradeable guns, deathmatch, online multi with up to 8 players, and one to two players working on the main campaign. There’s even a dated Alpha build that you can opt to download and try out for yourself to see where the game is heading.

Crackdown 3 – Reagent Games (XBO)
http://www.crackdown.com/
TBA 2016

What is it?
Tentatively hinted at a release in 2016, Crackdown 3 promises to utilize Microsoft’s cloud tech to generate a high level of destructibility within the game. Again, players take on the role of a “super-powered agent” pursuing criminal factions throughout the city while increasing their own abilities. It will also feature co-op and competitive multiplayer where that destructive power can be put to the test together or against rivals. Since its announcement in 2014, things have been quiet with little new news beside tidbits like its connection to Microsoft’s Azure service.

Crossing Souls: An Adventure Between Life and Death – Fourattic (PC)
http://crossingsoulsthegame.com/
March, 2016

What is it?
This successfully Kickstarted project (and now supported by Devolver Digital as a publisher) bands together five unlikely kids, one mysterious relic, one power mad general, and the afterlife in an action adventure to save the world. It’s 1986 in California, and five friends discover a stone that allows them to slip into the afterlife and work with the dead to stop an evil plot to enslave the world. My first thought was this sounds like The Goonies mixed in with Monster Squad, and that’s already pretty awesome.

Cuphead – Studio MDHR (Windows, XBO)
http://www.cupheadgame.com/
TBA 2016

What is it?
This is a run ‘n gun, side scrolling game with two-player co-op and the hope to have “10-15 bosses per episode”, eventually reaching 30, in an effort to beat the Guinness World Record for Most Boss Battles in a Run and Gun Game which stands at 25. But that’s not all. One, the graphics are based on 1930’s cartoon aesthetics. Two, the bosses and mechanics are inspired by games ranging from Gunstar Heroes to Contra III. Pushing into 2016 as development continues on what still looks like an exciting take on an action game.

Day of the Tentacle Remastered – Double Fine (Linux, OS X, PS Vita, PS3, PS4, Windows)
http://dott.doublefine.com/
Early 2016

What is it?
The remastered version of an cult classic from Lucasarts’ vaults, Day of the Tentacle, which is also one of Tim Schaefer’s early projects as a co-project lead as well as the sequel to Ron Gilberts’ Maniac Mansion. The new version will also allow players to “swap” between classic and remastered modes, feature new fancy graphics, and even come with a commentary track by the original designers. Travel time using high tech porta potties to save the world from the purple tentacle’s mad schemes for world domination! Again!

The Deadly Tower of Monsters – ACE Team (PS4, Steam)
http://www.deadlytowerofmonsters.com/
January 19th, 2016

What is it?
Players will star as the heroic Dick Starspeed in a sci-fi B-movie played as a third-person action game. Apparently, the perspective is that of a movie with Dan Smith, the director, giving his own narrative on what’s going on (such as when the player does something outside of the script, such as dying). They’ll go up against nefarious robots, evil apes, and stop-motion dinosaurs in a quest to save the planet Gravaria from an evil Emperor with the help of Scarlet Nova, his heir apparent.

Dishonored 2 – Arkane Studios (PS4, Windows, XBO)
https://www.dishonored.com/#/dishonored2
Q2 2016

What is it?
The sequel to what some consider the “true” spiritual sequel to Looking Glass’ Thief series (and a damn fine stealthy game in its own right), Dishonored 2 takes place some years after the events of the first title and will feature the return of Corvo Attano (the protagonist of the first game) and the introduction of Emily Kaldwin who has all grown up and features in the first teaser trailer for the game as a skilled, supernaturally powered, assassin raising a lot of questions. Definitely on my radar for a must have. Loved the first game.

Dying Light: The Following – (Linux, PS4, Windows, XBO)
http://dyinglightgame.com/
February 9, 2016

What is it?
The expansion to the first-person parkour survival action game, Dying Light, takes players outside of the city of Hakkan and into an area larger than all of the maps from the original game combined. It takes place some time after the events of Dying Light and places the player in the shoes of a new character as they seek to survive what is waiting for them out there. The new expansion also comes with new weapons and a driveable buggy that can be customized. But owners of the original game will also be getting additional HD tweaks upgrading them to the “Enhanced” version free of charge outside of the expansion. How’s that for fan service?

Enter the Gungeon – Dodge Roll Games (Linux, Windows, OS X, PS4)
http://dodgeroll.com/gungeon/
February, 2016

What is it?
A rogue-like dungeon crawler turning every room into a top-down bullet hell. Players will pick from a variety of Gungeoneers who want to shoot their way to a dungeon’s deepest levels to find the ultimate prize – a gun that can destroy the pasts that they want to escape. It will boast a lot of guns that shoot everything from missiles and bullets to bees…yes, bees. Sounds like a 16-bit, dungeon crawling take on Borderlands, only set in a random dungeon with tons of bullets spewing everywhere.

Far Cry Primal – Ubisoft (PS4, Windows, XBO)
http://far-cry.ubisoft.com/primal/en-US/home/
February 23, 2016

What is it?
This iteration of Ubisoft’s open-world Far Cry series will send players to 12,000 BC where they will learn to survive using Stone Age tools and weapons against threats ranging from woolly mammoths, sabertooth tigers, and even rival tribes. It boasts everything Far Cry – stealthy attacks, crafting, and a solid story – that the series has had in its back pocket, only now dishing it out on the Stone Age.

Firewatch – Campo Santo (Linux, OS X, PS4, Windows)
http://www.firewatchgame.com/
February 9, 2016

What is it?
Taking place in 1989, players become Henry who is assigned as a fire lookout in the Wyoming wilderness. His only link to the outside world is his supervisor, Delilah, who he can talk to on his walkie talkie. However quiet things might be, mysterious events soon force him to confront the world below his tower and pull him into an adventure where he may not be quite as isolated as he may think he is.

Fortnight – Epic Games (Windows)
http://www.fortnitegame.com/
TBA 2016

What is it?
A survival game from the makers of Bulletstorm where players can team up to survive the night against hordes of monsters. During the day, they’ll be able to explore an open, comically rendered world for supplies and materials needed to build up their home base and defend it. It sounds like it will have destructible environments and a unique art direction that promises to be something that players can tackle as a shooter, an RPG, or a building game. Not much else is known about the game other than it has been undergoing several alpha testing rounds with the community. It looks like it’s tentatively looking at a release sometime this year.

Friday the 13th: The Game – Gun Media (PS4, Windows, XBO)
http://f13game.com/
October, 2016

What is it?
Successfully Kickstarted, this project is a 1vs7 multiplayer horror experience where seven players will do their best to try and survive the horror of Camp Crystal Lake as another player, donning the hockey mask of the infamous Jason Voorhees, hunts them them down to kill them in a variety of ways just like from the films. The game promises to pull together clips from all of those deaths into one trailer at the end of a round along with recreating the infamous camp and its counselors in all of their 80s glory.

Gang Beasts – Boneloaf (Linux, OS X, PS4, Windows)
http://gangbeasts.com/
TBA 2016

What is it?
Currently part of Steam’s Early Access (http://store.steampowered.com/app/285900/), it’s billed as a “silly local multiplayer party game with surly gelatinous characters, brutal melee fight sequences, and absurdly hazardous environments”. It’s a party beat ’em up where players can push, pull, punch, and shove each other off a variety of interesting spots from the sides of buildings to being pitched into a pit of fire.

Get Even – Farm 51 (Linux, OS X, Windows, PS4, XBO)
http://www.getevengame.com/
TBA 2016

What is it?
A first-person action adventure where the player will take on the role of “illegal investigator” Black, a person who works for the government and VIPs in taking care of inconvenient truths that they don’t want anyone to know about. The game wants to ask the question “what is real?” and is aimed at using VR like Oculus in a multiplayer setting merging it with the single-player aspects of the game. It had a successful vote up on Steam Greenlight so whenever it gets ready to go, it’ll already have a home over there. Like a few other games, this appeared on last year’s list and looks like it’s pushing into 2016.

Goliath – Whalebox Studio (Linux, OS X, Windows)
http://www.goliath-game.com/
February, 2016

What is it?
An action adventure game where players can build their own huge robots to fight giant monsters thanks to a detailed crafting system. There will be quests, many different materials, and a high degree of promised customization. The game attempted to drum up a bit of additional funding via Kickstarter to expand on its features but didn’t make its goal. It’s still expected for release in 2016, however (despite a lack of updates since August on the official site), with the developers promising to continue work in a final message on their Kickstarter.

Gravity Rush: Remastered – Project Siren (PS4)
https://www.playstation.com/en-us/games/gravity-rush-remastered-ps4/
February 2, 2016

What is it?
The HD release for the PS4 where players will play as Kat, a girl with gravity altering powers flying through a fantastic, floating city in an effort to save it. The problem is that she has no idea who she is and through her adventures, will slowly discover the secrets to her past. The game was critically well received when it made its PS Vita debut and hopes to reproduce that success on the PS4.

Gravity Rush 2 – SCE Japan Studio (PS4)
http://www.jp.playstation.com/scej/title/gravitydaze/2/
TBA 2016

What is it?
Sequel to the first Gravity Rush which debuted on the PS Vita and is slated to come ot the PS4 in a remastered version. Known as Gravity Daze 2 in Japan, the game will feature three gravity styles and a tag battle system where players can be helped by an AI companion allowing players to “mix and match a wide variety of combat styles”. Like the previous game, players will fly through floating cities and battle strange creatures to solve a new mystery and save the world. However, there are no plans for a Vita release of the game.

Hardware: Rivals – SCE Connected Content Group (PS4)
https://www.playstation.com/en-us/games/hardware-rivals-ps4/

What is it?
Successor to 2002’s Hardware: Online Arena. It’s a third-person vehicular combat game.

Headlander – Double Fine Productions (Windows)
http://www.adultswim.com/games/headlander/
TBA 2016

What is it?
Being made in association with Adult Swim, Headlander is about a head (yours) sealed inside a flying helmet and able to take over robotic bodies to use new abilities and hopefully discover why you are the way you are, what happened to everyone else, and why there are robots everywhere in what looks like a 70s inspired world. Aside from plenty of shooting action, it will also boast puzzles and even conversations between robot citizens who will react differently depending on what body you’re in at the time.

Hellblade – Ninja Theory (PS4)
http://www.hellblade.com/
TBA 2016

What is it?
Ninja Theory’s next title is an action adventure based on Celtic myth as Senua makes her journey through a hellish underworld. Development continues and you can follow along on the official site which also lists blogs detailing the processes they’re going through. Given the lessons learned from their work starting with Heavenly Sword on through DMC, Ninja Theory’s Hellblade could channel all of that into players’ hands when it finally arrives. It appeared on last year’s list and looks like it’s pushing into 2016 like a few other games have.

Hitman – IO Interactive (PS4, Windows, XBO)
https://hitman.com/en-us
March 11, 2016

What is it?
The newest Hitman title will feature a host of improvements over Absolution including larger “sandbox” areas, more assassination opportunities, save anywhere (no more checkpoints), and different cities including tools for players to build and share their own custom contracts (just like what Absolution had also provided). It’s also episodic, but the base game will function as a huge collection of content that the other additional episodes (which will introduce new cities and contracts) will connect to. A full version of the game will also be available afterwards. I liked Absolution barring a few things that I thought could’ve been done better and the new iteration sounds like it’s heading in the right direction.

Hitman Go – Square Enix Montreal (PS Vita, PS4)
https://www.square-enix-montreal.com/en/games/hitmango
TBA 2016

What is it?
Port of the mobile game take on the Hitman series which renders the protagonist, characters, and environments like miniatures set in dioramas as part of a turn-based puzzle adventure. Players navigate Agent 47 on a set grid, avoiding enemies, stealing uniforms, and taking down their targets in a clever re-imagining of the franchise.

Hyrule Warriors Legends – Nintendo (3DS)
http://zelda.com/hyrule-warriors/
January 21, 2016

What is it?
The 3DS port of the popular Hyrule Warriors title from the Wii U, now for the 3DS with all of the content that had been released for its console iteration as well as including a new chapter and characters such as Linkle.

Jenny LeClue – Mografi (Linux, OS X, Windows)
http://jennyleclue.com/#
TBA 2016

What is it?
A hugely successful Kickstarter campaign will see that Mografi gets to complete their proposed trilogy of games featuring Jenny as a kid detective whose first case will see her trying to clear the name of her mom who has been accused of murder. The game boasts a number of interesting features including choice and consequence for certain decisions made, collecting what each player had decided, and then using that as a foundation for how the main story will unfold not unlike what certain games such as the tabletop RPG, Torg, had also done with their mail-in responses to influence the central campaign. It’s also been Greenlighted on Steam and has a short demo to show off what the full game could be like.

The Last Guardian – genDESIGN (PS4)
http://www.jp.playstation.com/scej/title/trico/
TBA 2016

What is it?
After suffering multiple delays, vaporware rumors, and a general lack of information, the spiritual sequel to Ico is targeting at release in 2016 and ready to take players on a journey into adventure with a giant companion at their side. As to whether it’s going to meet that promise is something else, entirely.

The Legend of Zelda – Nintendo (Wii U)
http://e3.nintendo.com/games/wiiu/the-legend-of-zelda/
TBA 2016

What is it?
The 18th installment of the famous series was revealed at E3 2014 as an open-world adventure starring Link. Other than demo footage and a few screenshots, little else is known about the game other than the huge amount of excitement that it has generated among fans. The series has flirted with open-world concepts many times before, but the new Zelda will also boast new approaches to solving its puzzles and dungeons outside of what was already explored by its prior titles. It looks like it might tentatively be aiming for a 2016 release — a controversial date that has some thinking it could be a title for Nintendo’s mysterious console rumored to be making its way to a release sooner than much later, the “NX”.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD – Nintendo (Wii U)
http://www.zelda.com/tp/
March 4, 2016

What is it?
It’s the HD port of Twilight Princess for the Wii U. In addition to updated graphics, it will also include Amiibo integration. A bundle is also announced for its release next year that includes a Wolf Link Amiibo and part of the game’s soundtrack.

Lego Marvel’s Avengers – TT Games (Nintendo 3DS, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, X360, XBO)
http://www.lego.com/en-us/marvelsuperheroes/marvels-avengers
January 26, 2016

What is it?
The Lego-ized version of both Avengers movies with extras. Players can take on the roles of their favorite heroes such as Iron Man or the mighty Thor while doing battle with familiar villains like Loki and Ultron, smashing them (and legions of disposable minions) into Lego blocks. If this is anything like the other Lego games, expect tons of collectables, unlockables, and Lego grinding.

Let It Die – Grasshopper Manufacture (PS4)
http://www.grasshopper.co.jp/en/projects/lilybergamo.html
TBA 2016

What is it?
What started out as a game called “Lily Bergamo” starring a female protagonist named “Tae Ioroi” has now become Let It Die, a “super action game” where you can die and then appear in someone else’s game. Players will also do battle against dead player avatars and will be free-to-play. It was later announced that it would be pushed from its 2015 release and into 2016 sometime.

Mafia III – Hangar 13 (OS X, PS4, Windows, XBO)
https://mafiagame.com/
TBA 2016

What is it?
The next iteration of the Mafia series is set in New Orleans in 1968 where players are cast as Lincoln Clay, a Vietnam veteran, who joins the “black mob” as part of the developer’s aim to “reclaim” the word mafia to mean more than the Italian mob. Along with having New Orleans as the backdrop, players will also get to take over territory within the city, assign it to one of their lieutenants (potentially creating friction between the others) for specific bonuses, and seek the old fashioned goal of revenge.

Man ‘O War: Corsair – evil.twin Artworks (Windows)
http://manowarcorsair.com/
TBA 2016

What is it?
Game adaptation of Games Workshop’s Man ‘O War tabletop sea battle wargame set in the Warhammer Fantasy universe. Players can be pirates, traders, and battle both beasts and others for control of the waves and the riches that it might also provide those who survive. The site promises boarding actions, captaining unique ships, and the forces of chaos leering right back at them.

Manifold Garden – William Chyr Studio (Linux, OS X, PS4, Windows)
http://manifold.garden/
TBA 2016

What is it?
It’s an “exploration puzzle game” taking place in a universe where physical laws can be turned upside down in the blink of an eye thanks to a gravity manipulation mechanic that the player can use to reverse gravity, turn walls into floors, and create all sorts of bizarre effects. The world also loops, so if you drop a block off the edge, you can watch it fall and eventually return from above to keep falling – the same with water looping. If you’ve ever stared at an Escher painting and wondered what it would be like to walk around it while messing with physics, or remember the last scene in Labyrinth as David Bowie confused the hell out of Jennifer Connelly by almost doing the same thing there, this game could be for you.

Mega Man Legacy Collection Collector’s Edition – Capcom (Nintendo 3DS, PS4, XBO)
http://megaman.capcom.com/
February 23, 2016

What is it?
The physical release of the digital collection available on Steam, Xbox Live, and PSN. The 3DS’ Collector’s version will come with a golden Mega Man Amiibo and postcard art. Each copy will also come with stickers along with music & theme downloads.

MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune VS Zombies – Compile Heart (PS TV, PS Vita)
http://ideafintl.com/blanc-zombies/
April 26, 2016

What is it?
An action game that seems to take part of the Neptunia series of RPGs and putting an action spin on the setting with zombies. Apparently, in Gamicademi, Gamindustri’s school where CPU candidates go, Blank and her friends have to make a movie while fighting zombies and “look cute” at the same time. It will support multiplayer between 4 friends and have new characters.

Mighty No. 9 – Comcept/Inti Creates (Linux, Nintendo 3DS, OS X, PS Vita, PS3, PS4, Wii U, Windows, X360, XBO)
http://www.mightyno9.com/
February 9, 2016

What is it?
(full disclosure: I backed this on Kickstarter)
The successfully Kickstarted “spiritual successor” to Mega Man by the designer who created him, Keiji Inafune, along with his team at Comcept. In this adventure, as Beck, players must fight fellow robots gone mad from a virus and bring whoever is responsible to justice. In addition to an experienced cadre of designers and artists working on it, the project is also notable for its timely updates and community outreach events from fan art showcases, developer diaries, to polls helping to determine things like Call’s (Beck’s partner) appearance in the game to releasing an early prototype to backers above a specific tier as a reward and to help gauge feedback. However, it has also run into a number of bumps in the road to release such as a controversial delay to 2016.

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst – DICE (PS4, Windows, XBO)
http://www.mirrorsedge.com/
May 24, 2016

What is it?
The long awaited sequel to Mirror’s Edge, will take players back into the world of Faith to experience her origins in an open-world, and heavily surveilled, city where peace exists only as a convenient excuse for the control its citizens have sacrificed over their lives. Like with the previous game, players will be seeing the world through Faith’s eyes and traveling across its rooftops and over obstacles with parkour while fighting the oppressive system with only her wits and her abilities to keep her safe. She’ll be able to run from danger, smash into gun-toting guards with her feet to disarm them, and keep running. I’m a big fan of the first game and can’t wait for this one.

Mother Russia Bleeds – Le Cartel (Linux, OS X, PS4, Windows)
http://motherrussiableeds.com/
TBA 2016

What is it?
A game harkening back to the “golden age” of beat ’em ups inspired by Double Dragon and Streets of Rage with its pixel art visuals and hard hitting action made even crazier for today. Players are cast as an “antihero” whose drug addled self must escape and find vengeance in the USSR by brawling their way across and alternate vision of the Soviet empire in the 80s. Players can even fill syringes from enemies’ corpses and either use them to restore their health or go “berserk”.

New Danganronpa V3: Minna no Koroshiai Shingakki – Spike Chunsoft (PS4, PS Vita)
http://www.danganronpa.com/2016/
TBA 2016

What is it?
Visual novel where you must use lies in Class Trials and debates to figure out who among your classmates is a killer taking out everyone else.

Night In The Woods – Alec Holowka, Scott Benson, Bethany Hockenberry (Linux, OS X, Windows)
http://www.nightinthewoods.com/
TBA 2016

What is it?
Join Mae, an anthropomorphic, college dropout cat, as she heads home to find herself and discover that not everything is as it used to be. There’s something strange going on in the woods and it’ll be up to the player to guide her through trippy visuals in exploring her hometown and talk to its residents to discover the truth.

No Man’s Sky – Hello Games (PS4, Windows)
http://www.no-mans-sky.com/
June, 2016

What is it?
Touted as “a science fiction game set in an infinite procedurally generated galaxy”, the game promises to allow would-be explorers fly into space, land on planets, hunt for resources and riches, buy new ships and upgrades, and battle it among the stars in a seemingly endless slice of space. How they go about uncovering its secrets is totally up to them with the option to share their own discoveries with other players online.

Noct – C3SK (Windows)
http://www.noctgame.com/
TBA 2016

What is it?
Currently on Early Access in Steam, this indie horror title is an action game seen through the pixelated black & white lens of a satellite far overhead a post apocalyptic landscape. Your mission is simply to survive for as long as possible, finding supplies, looting buildings, and killing the horrors that lurk and leap at you from just outside the satellite’s narrow field of vision. It also has multiplayer elements where you can jump into others’ persistent worlds and either help each other, or betray your new friend to get what they could be carrying. Right now, it’s hoped that it releases sometime in 2016 as a feature complete title.

Obduction – Cyan, Inc. (OS X, Windows)
http://www.obductiongame.com/
TBA 2016

What is it?
Cyan’s name should be familiar to adventure fans everywhere for the Myst series. With a successful Kickstarter in 2013 behind them, they’ve set out to work on a new, real-time adventure “hearkening back” to Cyan’s earlier successes. Mysteriously, the player is plucked from their home and dropped into an alien landscape complete with what looks like a white picket fence and a farmhouse. How you ended up there, and figuring out the mysteries of this new world, will tell the player’s story. It was expected in 2015 but like many other Kickstarters, is pushing past its estimated release and into 2016.

The game also features roguelike elements so no two games will be the same, procedural worlds, “fast paced combat”, and the ability to modify and empower your mob to serve your ultimate end in taking down the 12 Olympians and their monstrous guardians. This one’s easily on my list of anticipated games.

Fall 2016

What is it?
The sequel to the popular horror-survival game, it’s set in the same world as the first and introduces a “twisted new journey into the depths of the human mind and its dark secrets” which isn’t much of a surprise. Other details are pretty lacking as of this writing other than the promise of deciding “who was right and who was wrong”, but for fans of the original, a sequel should be good news.

November, 2016

What is it?
Ice-Pick’s remake of their cult survival hit from 2005 which met with acclaim in Russia and was eventually released most recently to the rest of the world as an HD remake available on Steam. Ice-Pick’s re-envisioning of their classic survival game will revisit all of the same themes – the relentless progression of choices and consequences (if you miss a quest or a request, it’s missed), realistic survival against a brutal plague, playing as one of three potential healers with different philosophical ideas on how to treat the victims, and whether or not you will make it through twelve days. It survived a successful Kickstarter and is currently earning more funding through its official site above.

http://www.recoregame.com/
Q2 2016

What is it?
Only a teaser trailer (revealed at E3 2015) and website short on information are all that say anything about the game set in what looks like a post-apocalyptic world. It suggests that players will be able to befriend robotic helpers (apparently with the help of a glowing “core” that can be inserted into inert robots) to aid them in their journey. At the time of this article, the official site seems to have literally stopped updating after July 30th with a fan art appreciation event.

UPDATE (1.6.2016): It looks like this one’s pushed into the last half of 2016.

Q4/January 28, 2016

What is it?
The port of the XBO exclusive, Rise of the Tomb Raider, to Windows with a Q4 release expected for the PS4 version. I really enjoyed the Xbox 360 version despite the glitches (vanishing bodies) and thought it was a great entry for Crystal Dynamics’ reboot path for the series.

TBA 2016

What is it?
The sequel to the stealthy goblin’s adventures will see Styx in the midst of the city of Dark Elves where a mysterious conspiracy has drawn him out of hiding. The first game had an interesting premise, some neat upgrade mechanics, and a decent collection of stealthy challenges. On the other hand, it also had a number of rough edged flaws, but I’m willing to give it a second shot and see what the enhancements Cyanide has planned for the game.

Syberia 3 – Anuman Interactive (Android, iOS, OS X, PS4, Windows, XBO)

Little is known about the story itself, but a few screenshots have already been released teasing the setting along with a number of art concepts describing other characters. It was initially slated for release in late 2015, but now looks like it’s heading into 2016.

Thimbleweed Park – Terrible Toybox (Linux, OS X, Windows)
http://blog.thimbleweedpark.com/
July, 2016

What is it?
Very successfully Kickstarted back in late 2014, this point ‘n click adventure by Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick, two of the makers of Lucasarts’ Maniac Mansion, hearkens back to the days of the SCUMM adventures of yore with a mysterious body found in a park, five different characters to switch between, and all of the puzzles you can shake an inflatable animal at. Although updates are sparse on their Kickstarter, they’ve provided all of their updates on an official site outside of it – in this case, a development blog – that’s open to everybody even if you’re not a backer. It’s also cool because in addition to showing everyone their progress, there’s also a vignette or two of info on their work with Lucasarts for fans interested in knowing more about those halcyon days and the games they worked on including a podcast they do to keep everyone up to date.

This War of Mine: The Little Ones – 11 bit studios (PS4, XBO)
http://www.tlo.thiswarofmine.com/
January 29, 2016

What is it?
Based on the same survival premise as This War of Mine, this time both adults and children will be facing the same challenges together in a war torn city divided between other survivors and military factions. Like its predecessor, it will feature a randomized world and challenges along with the kind of exploration and resource gathering allowing your band of survivors to build everything they need from heat stoves to growing plants for food. I thought This War of Mine was a thoughtful look at a serious topic in game form and The Little Ones looks to do the same thing.

Players team up to build a town from nothing and defend it from invaders determined to see civilization collapse again. http://www.unchartedthegame.com/

What is it?
Litttle is known about the story other than that Nathan Drake has been retired for a few years following his last adventure and is now being forced back into the life he thought he left behind on the trail of a conspiracy surrounding pirate treasure. In the trailer revealed at Sony’s Playstation Experience, gameplay appeared to be a mix of mechanics seen in both Tomb Raider and Assassin’s Creed with Drake climbing, shooting, and pushing enemies from clifftops while quipping his bad luck. At the end, it was revealed that his brother has entered the picture, adding to the mystery.

http://compulsiongames.com/en/10/we-happy-few
June, 2016

What is it?
Taking place in an alternate 1964 English town, everyone lives in delightful delusion thanks to a hefty diet of drugs and paranoia. Your task is to escape by any means possible by scavenging supplies, crafting weapons and new drugs, and hopefully not arousing the suspicion of the town’s conformist society. You’re apparently not a very nice person yourself, but it doesn’t matter when everyone has a permanent smile on their face. It’s also a roguelike – there’s no checkpoint system or saves. Death resets the city and generates a new one ensuring that no two games may be exactly alike.

What Remains of Edith Finch – Giant Sparrow (PS4)
http://www.giantsparrow.com/games/finch/
TBA 2016

What is it?
An exploratory adventure game where the player, as Edith Finch, explores her cursed family tree and participates in the stories unfolding around each member from the 1900s to the present day in an effort to discover why she is the last alive. http://the-witness.net/
January 26, 2016

What is it?
Jonathan Blow and his team continue to work on polishing the game for its release in 2016. In the latest release from the Braid developer, players will get the chance to freely explore a mysterious island and solve its many puzzles. One of the aims of the game is to play on players’ perceptions in order to create unique experiences that write their own way through the story.

Wulverblade – Darkwind Media (Windows, XBO)
http://wulverblade.com/
TBA 2016

What is it?
A side-scrolling beat ’em up where players are transported to 120 AD and fight to defend the northern half of Britannia from the encroaching power of the Roman Empire. It also sounds a bit similar to the approach that Ubisoft’s Valiant Hearts took by introducing real places and events via its 2D animated action, teaching a bit a history through play. Could be the most exciting battle between “barbarians” and the Romans since Konami’s Asterix beat ’em up adaptation in the arcades. Updates on their official blog seem to have halted in September and there has been little to no news on the project’s status since then. I’ll just leave this entry here in case they’ve just gone dark to develop the game.

Yakuza Kiwami – SEGA (PS3, PS4)

Even after hunting down the villain at the end, players will be able to go back and explore the world for more extras that they might have missed.

Zero Time Dilemma – Spike Chunsoft (Nintendo 3DS, PS Vita)
http://zero-escape.com/coming-soon/
Q2/Q3 2016

A new visual novel in the Zero Escape series that looks to be the final chapter answering all of the questions from the previous entries. It’s set between “Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors” and “Virtue’s Last Reward”.
