Orko was never an in-your-face fighter in the original cartoons laying out legions of Skeletor’s minions, but he’s something of a badass in this fan made beat ’em up beta.
You can snag it over at indie outlet, Gaming Jolt. It’s being put together by bWWd, an artist with a profile on Deviant Art here, and a team of fellow fans using the Beats of Rage engine which is a freeware software package allowing anyone to slap together their own beat ’em up fantasy the way they have.
I’ve played through it and it has quite a bit of promise. Even as a beta, it nails the idle animations and looks of the characters you can play as if you remember the old 80s cartoon – He-Man, Orko, Man-at-Arms, and the Sorceress are available for play with more to be added in. There also looks to be four-way co-op in the works.
The demo is 9 levels long as you can catch a video below showing you some of the gameplay to expect. It’s still very much a work in progress but the presentation dredges up tons of nostalgia value for anyone that remembers the Filmation series by packing in music and sound effects from the cartoon alongside classic foes such as Horde Troopers (She Ra is planned to be the next playable character) and Shadow Beasts. There’s even a boss encounter with surprise cameo help from Battle Cat and villainous intervention by Beast Man.
So if you want to try out a free beat ’em up game, and have an itch for He-Man nostalgia, be sure to give this one a try and see if you have the power.
